Rev. Sr. Mary Irene Lucy Onyai returned to the glory of God the Father on September 4th 2020. She was laid to rest on September 7th 2020 in Gulu at the Convent cemetery of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu (LSMIG).
Born on 5/11/1962, she joined the Congregation of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu in1984 as an Aspirant and made her 1st Religious Profession in the family of the LSMIG on 6th January 1987 and she celebrated her Silver Jubilee of Religious life on 6/1/2012. As a congregation, we are still in shock of the untimely demise of our beloved Sister Irene. We are trying to pick up the pieces and live without her and with deep faith that death is the only way to heaven. Like Job we say, “the Lord gave and the Lord has taken back, may God’s name be praised” (Job 1: 21-22).
As a Congregation, we are deeply grateful to all the people whose lives were touched by Sr. Irene. She had initiated two big projects which will remain as her legacy. Namely:
1. “The World of Princess” which empowered young vulnerable girls to fight for justice and respect. In the World of Princess, the young girls gained life skill to fight for their right to safety and right to education. The world of Princess encouraged the girls to remain in school, they are taught to have catholic morals, of respect for self and respect for others, to have good discipline and be responsible women in the future. Some of the girls have become sisters and are doing very well and others have become responsible women holding important leadership positions in the society. This was a great apostolate Sister Irene was doing for the young girls in Nebbi Catholic Diocese.
2. “The Divine Mercy Multipurpose Centre” this complex that is meant to house physical treatment center for people with physical ailments through massage (ceregem) It is a center for Spiritual and human development training that expound the values of Catholic Social teaching through meetings, workshops of various kinds. The structure is not complete.
Sr. Irene, send us those contagious smiles so that we may continue to smile here on earth as we struggle to reach where you are. May the Lord receive the soul of Sister Irene and rest her gentle soul in eternal peace. Amen.
